Meet the School Board Candidates

Chris Heinze is seeking his first term on the District 623 School Board

Editor’s note: The Roseville Patch invited each of the six candidates for District 623 School Board to respond to a brief questionnaire listing their qualifications for the job and priorities for the district.  Today we feature Chris Heinze, who is seeking his first term on the school board.

Chris Heinze:  I am an attorney at Libby Law Office, P.A., in St. Paul. I practice business and corporate law, corporate governance, and general corporate transactional law.  I teach business law at Hamline University as an adjunct professor and I’m a member of the Board of Directors of Teatro del Pueblo, a non-profit Latino theater in St. Paul.

Roseville Patch: What are your qualifications for the position you are seeking?

Heinze: Initially and perhaps most importantly, I have two young daughters, Grace (age 7) and Greta (age 4) in the district – Grace will be a second-grader this fall at EDW, and Greta participates in ECFE at the district center.  My entire family is wholly vested in the success of our district, in the short term, the long term, and the right now.  Additionally, I counsel businesses and other organizations regarding their governance. This includes drafting bylaws, advising boards regarding their authority and their obligations, and ensuring compliance with the law. I also serve as a board member for a non-profit organization, where I continue to gain first-hand board experience. Perhaps more than others, because of my background and experiences, I appreciate the duty the board has to the citizens and taxpayers of District 623, the families who entrust our district with their children’s education, and our students.

Roseville Patch: What do you think are the most important issues facing District 623?

Heinze: One of the most important issues facing District 623 in the near term is how to successfully navigate the delay of state aid as a result of this past legislative session.  This includes the nuts and bolts of maintaining positive cash flow and also ensuring that the overall quality of our schools doesn’t drop, but in fact improves.  Additionally, closing race-based achievement gaps, and increasing administration and board transparency are other important issues our district faces.  These are issues we can tackle together and create an even stronger district for our kids. There will be at least one new board member (if not more) after the election this fall, and getting fresh perspectives will help maintain the level of success that our district requires and that our children deserve.
