Roseville Man Charged with Assaulting Woman in Hopkins
Mauro Gonzalez Jr. is charged with felony domestic assault after police say he repeatedly punched a woman and slammed her head against his car's center console.
A Roseville man is accused of punching a woman in Hopkins and slamming her head into the center console of his car after they argued about gasoline money.
Mauro Gonzalez Jr., 29, is charged with felony domestic assault, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
A woman called police on April 15 and said she had been assaulted in Hopkins, according to the criminal complaint, compiled by Hopkins Police Detective Renee Meuwissen.
The woman said she spent the night with Gonzalez, her ex-boyfriend and the father of her four children, at her home and that the next morning he gave her a ride to her cousin’s home in Minneapolis.
On the way, the woman and Gonzalez, of Roseville, began arguing about gasoline money, she said. Gonzalez allegedly told the woman to “shut the [expletive] up” and punched her in the left side of her face as he drove through Hopkins, according to the complaint.
After the woman punched Gonzalez back, he pulled over into a drugstore parking lot in St. Louis Park and threatened to “beat the [expletive]” out of her, the complaint says.
She said Gonzalez then punched her three times in the head, grabbed her by the hair and slammed her head into the car’s center console three times and then punched her in the back of her head about 10 times, according to the complaint.
The woman told police Gonzalez had pulled out her hair during the assault.
After the alleged assault, Gonzalez left the parking lot and drove onto Highway 7. He stopped at the intersection of Highways 7 and 100 and told the woman to get out of the car, the woman told police.
A surveillance camera at the drugstore captured video of Gonzalez’s car. Police arrested him at his Roseville home and impounded his car, where they found human hair near the center console, according to the complaint.
Gonzalez’s criminal record includes convictions for domestic assault in 2007 and 2008.
He is free on a $5,000 bond. An omnibus hearing in his case is scheduled for May 9 in Hennepin County District Court.
