So a police officer left a loaded weapon in an unlocked, unsecured civilian vehicle overnight. Why not just leave it on the hood with a note saying, "Please take my gun."

Is this officer being investigated for negligence? This is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. It ought to be grounds for dismissal from the police department. It is inexcusable.

Wow! Someone woke up on their high horse today. Have you never forgotten something in your car? You need to remember that officers are just as human as the rest of us. The article did say that the weapon was in the center console of the vehicle. Unless you have x-ray eyes, you would not have been able to see it from outside the vehicle. Cars have things stolen from them everyday. This is not news.

Yeah, I've forgotten stuff in my car. Not guns though. Police officers should not "forget" guns in their cars like they might forget sunglasses. It's a little different.

This is news because the officer did not take care of a loaded weapon. He was not conscientious; he was careless. I fear for our public safety if there are cops who don't even have the presence of mind to secure their weapons, loaded or not.

I'm wondering if a neighbor stole it -- someone who knows the guy's a cop. Since he left the vehicle unlocked, this was a crime of opportunity. Someone might have watched him exit the car and go inside, then waited for a good chance. Knowing the guy's a cop, perhaps the thief (rightly) surmised that there may be a gun in the car.

I see both sides of the issue here. Who knows why the police man forgot the gun in his car. We all make mistakes. But someone getting ahold of this gun is a very serious thing. I just hope and pray, that the police can track this down and solve the case before anyone gets hurt.
