What About That Treasure Hunt?

St. Paul, with its Winter Carnival, isn't the only town with a treasure hunt. Here's a list of some other communities that sponsor medallion hunts through the year.

For the past 61 years, the St. Paul Pioneer Press has sponsored a treasure hunt during the time of the city's Winter Carnival celebration.

The St. Paul treasure hunt has been a way for locals to break up the winter doldrums and have fun to boot. Not to mention that the potential prize for this year's lucky medallion finder is a cool $10,000.

The St. Paul treasure hunt will conclude no later than Jan. 31.

It's not, however, the only treasure in the area.

Fridley: The annual medallion hunt is a highlight of Fridley's Winterfest on Saturday, Jan. 26, 1–4 p.m. at Commons Park, 6249 Seventh St. NE, Fridley. Medallion hunters gather at the nearby Fridley Community Center for clues revealed on the half hour. The event is free and open to all.

Hudson: It's not a medallion hunt per se, but the Hudson Hot Air Affair (Feb. 1-3) holds a special geocaching event with special hides every year. All you need is a GPS device and some coordinates. Hudson is a year-round hotbed for geocaching where people can easily find 50 or 100 different caches in a day. Find out more at http://hudsonhotairaffair.com.

But if trudging through the bitter cold with snow shovel or ice chopper in hand isn't your cup of tea, there are other communities in the Twin Cities that hold treasure hunts during warmer months. Here's a list of some of them:

Roseville: The city's Golden Rose medallion hunt is held in conjunction with the community's annual Rosefest summer celebration. This year's Rosefest hunt will start on June 23. The prize is usually a basket of gift certificates from local businesses. To read about last year's winner, click onto this link.

Hopkins:  The community has its hunt for the Golden Raspberry each year during the Raspberry Festival, which takes place in July. To read about past stories on this treasure hunt, click on to these Patch stories:
