Planet Fitness Taking Shape in Roseville

The new health club will occupy space formerly held by the now defunct Circuit City.

Taking over a retail space in Roseville that was once home to a Circuit City electronics store, Planet Fitness is starting to take shape.

The New Hampshire-based fitness center company has its outside sign now up on the building's facade. It will be occupying 25,000 square feet adjacent to neighboring Sports Authority in a small shopping district that is just south of Highway 36 and east of Fairview Avenue.

Patch could not reach Planet Fitness officials for comment. But the word on the street is that the new Roseville location is expected to open in early January.

With Planet Fitness taking the space that has been vacant since Circuit City's shuttering in 2009, Roseville will no longer have any significant empty retail spaces, Pat Trudgeon, Roseville community development director, told Roseville Patch last month. "Good to see that the economy is coming back, at least in Roseville."

The Roseville fitness center would the company's third Twin Clities location. Currently, it has health clubs in Bloomington and Brooklyn Park. According to Wikipedia, Planet Fitness opened its 500th U.S. location earlier this year.

Founded in the early 1990s, Planet Fitness touts itself as a basic health club operator, providing a wide array of exercise equipment but without the added cost of such things as juice bars and childcare.

Planet Fitness also pitches its facilities as places where ordinary people can go to exercise in its "Judgement Free Zone, which "means members can relax, get in shape, and have fun without being subjected to the hard-core, look-at-me attitude that exists in too many gyms."
