Steichen's Sporting Goods Gone; Now What?

Another sporting goods retailer plans to take residence.

It was Steichen's Sporting Goods for 58 years before shuttering its doors last month.

Now a sign proclaims that the former Steichen's building, 2425 Rice St., will become the "Future Home of Lids Team Sports."

The closing of Steichen's, known for its hockey equipment and carrying athletic team uniforms, came after being in business since 1954.

Three years ago, Lids Team Sports bought Steichen's and kept operating the store under its well-known name. But the retail space is now going to switch over to the Lids Team Sports banner.

Currently, Lids Team Sports is still operating a sales office from the Steichen's location, a salesman for Lids Team Sports said recently. Lids Team Sports has about a 1,000 sports stores across the country and has been reorganizing its retail operations, according to the salesman, Tom Rustad.
