Neoteric Chamber Winds Summer Concert

The Twin Cities’ ground-breaking brass, woodwind and
percussion ensemble, Neoteric Chamber Winds, announces its 2014 Summer
Concert Season. Our 4th season promises to be our best, as we perform a lively
mix of compositions with a modern take on classical, folk and jazz traditions.
Join us as we journey through Mexico, Cuba, Spain, Germany, and back to the
States.

Our program includes music rarely heard from Leonard
Bernstein (Fanfare for Bima), Amadeus Karl Hartmann (Tanzuite), Bernhard Heiden
(Intrada), Nancy Galbraith (Dos Danzas Latinas), Paquito D'Rivera (Habanera)
and works by two local composers - Daniel Kallman’s (An American Tapestry), and
Shelley Hanson’s new transcription of Manuel de Falla's Seven Spanish Folksongs
featuring soprano Kristi Bergland.

 Neoteric Chamber Winds was formed
primarily by members and friends of St. Paul’s Grand Symphonic Winds who
were seeking opportunities to perform in a more intimate setting. Founding
member Tracy Bergemann states, “Chamber music pushes us as musicians to stretch
and work in ways that we typically can't in larger ensembles. Small ensembles
demand greater flexibility, more nuance, effective teamwork and bigger ears.”

The traditional, “classical” repertoire for small
ensembles is vast, but as co-founder Tim Jung recalls, “The idea was to play
chamber music not often heard, with unusual combinations of players….I’d like
our audiences to be ‘surprised’ by our performances more than anything else.”
The ensemble—which is led entirely by its volunteer-performers—purposefully
seeks out unusual works for combinations of instruments that go beyond the
familiar woodwind or brass quintet. Over the group’s three-year existence, it
has performed works for instrument groupings as straightforward as a woodwind
quintet augmented by alto saxophone, to complex works requiring up to fifteen
players.
