An Honor Coming for the Roseville Police Department

Karen Organization recognizing the department for its work with the Karen community.

The Karen Organization of Minnesota (KOM) will be honoring the Roseville Police Department this coming Saturday.

The ceremony is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon at Johnson High School in St. Paul. Roseville Police Chief Rick Mathwig is excepted to accept the award from the Karen Organization.

KOM has said it is honoring the Roseville Police Department for its positive work with the Karen community over the past few years. The awards ceremony is on the same day the Karen community is celebrating its New Year.

On its website, the Karen Organization said, "The Karen (pronounced Ka-REN) are an ethnic group from the mountainous border regions of Burma and Thailand, where they are the second largest ethnic group in each country. They have long been subject to persecution and ethnic cleansing by the Burmese government, and many have been living in refugee camps in Thailand for years before being resettled to Minnesota.

"There are approximately 6,500 Karen living in Minnesota with an additional 500 refugees from other ethnic groups in Burma. St. Paul currently has the largest and fastest-growing Karen populations in the U.S.
