Easier, Simpler Recycling Coming to Roseville

City Council directs staff to negotiate three-year contract with Eureka Recycling.

The Roseville Council recently directed the city staff to negotiate a three-year contract with Eureka Recycling to provide the community with single-sort recycling service known as "single-stream recycling" starting in 2014.

The contract is expected to be $838,320 for the three-year period or $279,440 per year.

"These are estimated costs including revenue share assumptions based on the current recycled commodities markets," Duane Schwartz, Roseville director of public works , told Patch. "The City Council directed staff to work with Eureka on a three-year contract. Eureka will provide the carts for the residents within these numbers. Staff estimates the quarterly charge to residents in 2014 will decrease based on the bid received."

In moving to single-stream recycling, Roseville officials hope to further boost the high percentage of residents who participate in recycling.

Some 80 percent of Roseville households participate in recycling and residents recycled more than 3,000 tons of material in 2012, according to Eureka, a non-profit recycler who has provided its services to the city since 2006. The energy savings stemming from that recycling would have been enough to power 385 homes for a year, the non-profit recycler reported.
