A Powerhouse Athlete, Jacqlyn Poss Wins Roseville High's Athena Award

The senior is a three-sport standout in tennis, basketball and track and field. She is headed next fall to the University of Denver on a Division I basketball scholarship.

 

Roseville District 623 announced today (Thursday) that Roseville Area High School (RAHS) senior Jacqlyn Poss, a three-sport athlete,  has been named the school's 2013 Athena Award winner.

The Athena Awards recognize outstanding female senior athletes from high schools in St. Paul and surrounding suburban area.  Poss, the daughter of Marilynn and Steven Poss, Shoreview; will be one of 40 area seniors honored at the  annual Saint Paul Area Athena Awards ceremony on April 17 at the Prom Center in Oakdale.

In a news release, the District 623 public relations office said Poss is a standout athlete in basketball, tennis, and track and field, serving as captain for all three teams. 

Posse's accomplishments in basketball included: a school record for three-point shots; attained assist, scoring, and free throw honors; earned MVP status, and was named to both the St. Paul Pioneer Press and Minneapolis Star Tribune metro teams.

In tennis, Poss' talents earned her section honors as doubles runner-up and as a state doubles participant. 

In all three sports, Poss has won Raider Character awards and, in basketball and tennis, she has been recognized for her academic achievements, as well. 

“To be selected as Roseville’s Athena Award recipient is a testimony to Jacqlyn’s hard work and dedication during her athletic career at RAHS,” RAHS Athletic Director Jeff Whisler said in a news statement.  “Her academic achievement and community involvement reflect her well-roundedness as a student athlete.”

According to other information in the press statement: Poss, a  member of the National Honor Society, holds three academic letters, is taking Advanced Placement courses, has been recognized as a Student of the Trimester, and is on the RAHS A-Honor Roll. 

Poss is also a trombone player in the Symphonic Band and a member of the Raiders Against Destructive Decisions (RADD).  Her community involvement has included serving as a student representative on the Central Park Board Foundation and being involved in St. Odilia Catholic Church activities.

Poss plans to attend the University of Denver next year on a NCAA Division I basketball scholarship."
