PHOTOS: Students, Robots Participate in Regional Competition

FIRST Robotics held two metro-wide tournaments during the weekend.

Aspiring engineers from across the Twin Cities metro area came together to compete in two regional high school FIRST Robotics tournaments from March 29-31.

Both the 10,000 Lakes Regional Competition and the North Star Regional Competition were held on the University of Minnesota's Minneapolis campus. A team from Roseville High School participated in the competitions.

The robotics season begins in January, when FIRST Robotics sends out information about the task the robots must complete in the competitive meets and a kit of parts and electronics for each robot.

The challenge this year is called a “Rebound Rumble.” Each team must design a robot capable of picking up and shooting a basketball. In a tournament setting, the robots play against one another in teams of three, competing to score the most points.

Patch was at the tournaments on Friday and Saturday to capture the excitement, school spirit and friendly competition of the game.

And what an excellent event it was! Too bad you didn't post a photo of the Roseville High School Fire Bears team! They managed to win one of the top awards: The imaging award. Yay! They were also ranked 9th out of over 60 robot teams at the 10,000 Lakes even in Williams Arena. They moved to 8th place when the first ranked team chose the second ranked team as part of their alliance for the finals. They were then able to choose 2 other teams to compete with them in the semi-final rounds...where they just barely lost their first game by one second! After loosing 2 games they were out. It was truly the place to be for the weekend! In the first picture posted here, you can see the Roseville Head mentor and the Field Supervisor--with the red sleeves, Tom Lagason. Thank you so much for posting this article!

To bad you don't have a picture of the Roseville, Mounds View or Irondale teams. They are all local schools that participated.
You can watch the saturday afternoon event on CTV North Suburbs channel 15. They taped the event in Williams Arena and show a little of the event in Marrucci Arena.

Teresa, if you have any photos, you can upload them to our "pics and clips" which is on our home page. We'd be pleased to get some photos.
