Roseville School Board Votes Today on Preliminary Budget

Board must adopt a budget by June 30, depite deadlock at the Capitol.

The Roseville Area School Board is scheduled to vote tonight on a $92 million preliminary budget, a document that must be approved by June 30, even though the  Minnesota State Legislature and  Gov. Mark Dayton remain deadlocked on a budget bill.

“We are legally required to pass a budget for the next fiscal year by June 30, so we may not have the luxury of waiting to see how the governor and legislature work out their differences,” said board member Shari Dion. “This is preliminary budget, so we will do the best we can with what we know  right now.”

The district anticipates no increase in per-pupil formula allowance and other revenue sources from the state, according to a memorandum to the board from Barbara L. Anderson, district assistant director for finance and budget.  But some costs will be offset by a projected enrollment increase, a one-time federal grant, and increased compensatory revenue (money the district receives for disadvantaged students).

Costs will also be offset by a decrease in premium rates for group medical insurance, as well as the retirement of 16 teachers, Anderson noted.

The district held a public hearing on the  proposed budget on May 26.
