Sports Roundup: Fall Sports Season Begins

Several Raiders, Beacons commence 2011 campaigns last week.

The fall sports season kicked off last week as several teams from Roseville Area High School and Concordia Academy began their 2011 campaigns.

Roseville Girls Tennis

After beginning its season with its own tournament on Saturday, Aug. 20, the Roseville girls tennis team also took on several dual-match opponents last week and sit at 3-3 on the year heading into the final days of the month.

The Raiders won once and lost twice in their tourney, topping St. Paul Harding (4-3) and falling to Totino-Grace (4-3) and Hopkins (5-2) in the season opener.

Last week, Roseville sandwiched a loss to Virginia (4-3) on Aug. 23 with defeats of Henry Sibley (6-1) and North St. Paul (7-0) on Aug. 22 and 25, respectively.

Individual statistics were not available. This week, the Raiders are scheduled to host Minnehaha Academy on Monday and begin the Suburban East Conference schedule at White Bear Lake on Thursday.

Roseville Boys Soccer

The Roseville boys soccer team opened its fall with a win and a loss last week, losing 4-1 to Eastview on Thursday before defeating Tartan by an 8-1 score on Saturday.

Through two games, Elvis Barclay leads the Raiders with four goals, while Boyenneh Robertson and Mishiah Toe have recorded two assists apiece to pace the squad.

Roseville hosts Minneapolis Washburn at 7 p.m. Tuesday, then opens the SEC season with a 5 p.m. Thursday game at White Bear Lake.

Roseville Girls Soccer

It was not as fortunate of a start for the Roseville girls soccer team, as the Raiders dropped two straight contests to open the autumn.

Roseville lost 8-0 to visiting Eastview last Thursday, then fell 2-1 at Tartan on Saturday. Individual statistics were not available.

The Raiders are scheduled to host Hill-Murray at 7 p.m. Monday night, then travel to White Bear Lake for the conference opener on Thursday evening.

Concordia Academy Boys Soccer

A 10-1 defeat of host Mayer Lutheran High School last Friday got the Concordia Academy boys soccer team off to a spirited start this season.

The Beacons overwhelmed their competition behind two goals each from Mitchell Porch and Josh Falk and three assists from Alec Helseth. also scoring for Concordia in the game were: Pheng Thao, Matt Peterson, Kyle Bodley, Michael Scheller, Matt Manthey and Matt Cramer. 

Up next for the Beacons is a home opener against Tri-Metro Conference foe DeLaSalle on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and a 4 p.m. Friday game at St. Paul Johnson.

Concordia Academy Girls Soccer

The Concordia girls soccer team met with a rough start to the fall in a 6-0 loss against visiting South St. Paul on Saturday.

The Beacons set out on the road this week with a Monday game at Legacy Christian and a Thrusday contest at DeLaSalle.

Results were not available for scheduled competitions involving: Roseville swimming/diving, Roseville and Concordia cross-country running.
