Matthew's Game, Body Continue To Grow

A year after earning his first trip to state, the Roseville senior has catapulted into the top 5 golfers in Class AAA this season.

The transformation began last spring. Roseville senior Sam Matthew has been around golf all his life, and in five years on the Raiders’ varsity boys golf team coach Ralph Sibbet said he’s noticed Matthew’s gift of poise and well-crafted shots on the course. But Matthew was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease as an eighth grader, which affected his body’s growth. After undergoing colon surgery in February 2010, his frame—and his golf game—has grown by unfathomable amounts. Last year as a junior, Matthew finished tied for 10th at the Class AAA state tournament. As a senior, his average drive catapulted by 40 to 50 yards.
