Flu Impact Subsiding in Minnesota

MN Department of Health counted 15 deaths last week. But the number of people hospitalized with flu-like symptoms has fallen dramatically.

Influenza killed 15 more Minnesotans last week, bringing the total number of state deaths in the current outbreak to 75—more than the total number of state residents killed during the last big outbreak during 2009-10. But the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) weekly flu update, released Thursday afternoon, also contained good news: Only 208 people across the state were newly hospitalized last week with laboratory-confirmed influenza, a big drop from the 476 hospitalized the previous week. Health Department spokesman Doug Schultz told WCCO that it will be another week before officials know for sure where the flu season has peaked in Minnesota. But he added that trends are pointing in that direction. For example, there were only nine …

Is Flu Fading in Roseville?

A District 623 School official provides an update for Patch.

While January is "influenza season  in Minnesota," a Roseville school administrator said she doesn't believe this year's flu outbreak is extraordinary. In response to a Patch inquiry, District 623 issued this statement from Chris Sonenblum, director of student services. "The number of reported cases of influenza in schools reflects the cases in the community.  Our experience in District 623 during 2012-2013 is typical in terms of both reported cases and student absences.  We report to MDH (Minnesota Department of Health) only the first time the ten percent threshold is met in a school or classroom, however, the nurses do not interpret this year’s data as indicative of an epidemic.  "There is no reason to believe that this is an …

It has been reported that most of the people in the state that have unexpectedly and unfortunately died during this seasons influenza outbreak are older citizens who have compromised immune systems. And, with people living longer now then in the past, this will put more of the population at risk in contracting it. With that being said, small children are also at serious risk too.   more ›

Surging Flu Cases Hit Ramsey County

Doctor clinics in Roseville area also seeing more patients testing positive for influenza.

Ramsey County, including Roseville, is seeing a surge of influenza cases this winter, according to an official with the St. Paul/Ramsey County Health Department. "We are monitoring the situation in Ramsey County," said spokesman Chris Burns. "We are the same as the rest of the state and the Twin Cities. There is widespread influenza going on in the county." All but a handful of U.S. states have reported a dramatic increase in flu-related illnesses. As of the latest report from the Minnesota Department of Health, more than 500 people have been hospitalized due to the flu since the season began in October. At least five have died, including two otherwise healthy teens: Max Schwolert, 17, and Carly Christenson, a 14-year-old St. Louis Park …

Roseville modifies liquor license penalties

The council action comes at request of off-sale license holders and managers.

The Roseville City Council has modified the city’s liquor sales ordinance, reducing  penalties for violations by off-sale liquor license holders. Councilman Jeff Johnson proposed  modifying the ordinance, contending "the  penalty for off-sale was more harsh than for on-sale.” The amended ordinance, among other things, now cuts the penalty of off-sale liquor establishments selling to an underage person, on a first violation, from a one day suspension and a $1,000 fine to no suspension. Penalties for the off-sale license holders on a second and third violation for the same offense now are being reduced from five and 15 day suspensions to three and seven day suspensions within a three year period.    Penalties for holders of on-sale liquor …
