Szechuan Restaurant Hit With $1,000 Fine

Roseville Council approves the penalty after the restaurant failed an under-age liquor sales check.

The city of Roseville has levied a $1,000 fine and one-day suspension against the Szechuan restaurant, 2193 Snelling Ave. N., for recently failing an under-aged liquor sales check. The Roseville City Council on Monday night OKed the police department levying that penalty after Lt. Lorne Rosand reported that a waiter at the restaurant on April 11 served an undercover, under-aged buyer a Miller Geniune draft beer without checking their ID. Appearing before the Council, Szechuan owner Jessie Wong expressed regrets about the incident. "I'm sorry it happened and it won't happen again," she said. In a city staff report, Rosand wrote:  "On March 29th, 2013, all businesses with a liquor license in the city of Roseville were mailed a letter from …

Roseville Council Names Trudgeon as Interim City Manager

Director of community development to temporarily take the helm while city search for permanent replacement to Malinen.

The Roseville City Council late Thursday afternoon unanimously appointed community development director Pat Trudgeon as interim city manager. Trudgeon's appointment came at a special meeting, two days after six-year city veteran Bill Malinen resigned over what appeared to be differences in style. In an interview with Patch, Mayor Dan Roe contended Malinen and the Council were not effectively working together. Both sides realized they were not "fitting together well," he said. "In the best interests of each other it made sense to part ways."  At Thursday's special meeting, Council members said any number of adminisrative department heads could serve as interim city manager. Other potential appointees included public works director Duane …

I agree in general with Mr Hess's comments...but I didn't see anywhere that any current city employee is precluded from working their way to the top. Even when cities, school boards, other government or non-profit organizations do pay for a search, there can always usually be internal candidates. In fact, they statistically have an advantage... so much so, that if you talk with search firms, they…   more ›

Severance Package for Roseville Manager Comes With Resignation

Council-manager relations had been an apparent issue for several months.

Tuesday's resignation by Roseville City Manager Bill Malinen has come with a price tag: The City Council is granting him seven months severance pay as part of his separation agreement.  Asked about Malinen's severance package, Roseville Mayor Dan Roe told Roseville Patch the departed city manager is receiving seven months pay, six months per his original employment contract plus one extra month for consultative services.  Based on Malinen's 2013 annual salary of $141,024, he will receive about $82, 000 in severance pay. Although he declined to divulge specifics, Roe said Malinen's departure wasn't sudden or unexpected. "This has been in the works for sometime,' since the Council's December performance review of him, the mayor said.  Roe …

Good comments Gary. It troubled me that there was city manager interference in the operation of the commission you sit on, on issues that were really ones that only the council had a place to provide comment to your group. Your schedule of meetings, taking of meeting minutes, and basic administrative support was up to your commission. If someone in management had a problem, it was the mayor's job…   more ›

Roseville Council To Consider Supporting Legislation on Street Districts

The Minnesota League of Cities is urging cities to support legislation which would allow them to create street improvement districts to pay for road improvements.

The Roseville Council tonight (Monday) will consider whether to support a resolution calling on Minnesota state lawmakers to OK legislation giving cities the option to pay for road projects through street improvement districts.  In a staff report, Roseville Public Works Director Duane Schwartz said the League of Minnesota Cities is urging cities to adopt a resolution supporting the initiative.  Schwartz said, "Staff is supportive of this legislation as a possible funding tool for future use if the city were to create a district such as commercial or retail areas or the Twin Lakes area as an improvement district for road improvements in lieu of assessments which are challengeable under state statute. An Illuminating Plan For John Rose OVAL

Roseville Visitors Association planning holiday lighting festival on the grounds of the John Rose Oval.

If the Roseville Visitors Association has its way, the grounds of the John Rose OVAL will be all aglow during next fall's holiday season.  Leaders of the hospitality trade group told the Roseville City Council Monday night that their organization is working on a special "OVAL Illumination" festival for next holiday season. The vision is to have a free public lighting display that makes use of the more than 285 trees on the grounds of the outdoor skating facility, said Julie Wearn, CEO of the Visitors Association.  "We have arborvitae – which are 12 feet tall and evergreens ranging from 20 to 30 to 50 feet," she said.   Wearn said the special holiday lighting display would celebrate the 20th anniversary of the OVAL and could become an …
