"I'm Sad This Couldn't Happen Earlier"

Roseville's Gary Grefenberg, gay and also chairman of the city Human Rights Commission, called the state House of Representatives vote to legalize same-sex marriage a "critical first step" for the legislation.

As a gay man, Roseville's Gary Grefenberg has had plenty of reason to closely follow state legislation that would legalize marriage for same-sex couples in Minnesota. Today (Wednesday), the state House of Representatives took "a critical first,"  Grefenberg said, in passing a bill on that subject by a 75-59 vote. The Minnesota Senate is now expected to take up that same-sex marriage issue early next week and if it passes the bill, it would go to Gov. Mark Dayton to be signed into law.  "I hope it (the same-sex marriage bill) passes," said Grefenberg, also the chairman of the Roseville Human Rights Commission. But he said, with some lament, "For me, I'm sad it couldn't have happened earlier." Grefenberg also contended that for too many …

Roseville resident served several terms on the citizen commission.

For more than 20 years, Thelma McKenzie served on the Roseville Human Rights Commission, making her one of its rock-solid contributors. The Roseville City Council late last month awarded McKenzie a plaque, honoring her for her volunteer service. She has been on-and-off the commission since 1981 but recently had to resign because she moved out of the city to take residence in neighboring Shoreview. At one point, McKenzie said she served on the commission 11 consecutive years. "It's been a good run," McKenzie recently told Roseville Patch. "There have been good people and lots of opportunties." If your church or place of worship doesn't want to preform same-sex marriages, that's fine by fine. But your personal beliefs are no reason to deny me the ability to marry who I want. It has nothing to do with your religion. Marriage is a civil matter and denying me marriage is denying me equal rights under the law. The same arguements I hear about same sex marriage are the same arguements made …   more ›

The Roseville Human Rights Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. today (Thursday) at City Hall.

The Roseville Human Rights Commission (HRC) is meeting tonight (Thursday) to consider holding educational forums on the proposed Minnesota Minnesota Marriage and Voter ID amendments. An interesting observation from reader Martin. What do you think? is it un-American to say the proposed amendment is un-American? Does this border on political correctness?   more ›
