DFL Delegates Endorse Roseville's Marty for Senate District 66

Marty prevails over fellow DFL state senator Mary Jo McGuire

Update (3:40 p.m.) Roseville's John Marty Saturday afternoon won DFL endorsement for the new state Senate District 66, defeating fellow DFL senator Mary Jo McGuire. Convention delegates endorsed Marty on the first ballot, casting 66 percent of the votes for him. A prevailing candidate needed 60 percent of the vote for endorsement. The two lawmakers represented separate but neighboring senate districts until a few weeks ago when legislative redistricting put them in the same geographic area. "I wasn't sure how it (the endorsement) would go," said Charlie Quick, a DFL party official and DFL chairman of the former Senate District 54. Roseville Letter to The Editor: Mary Jo McGuire Is In The Race Too!

Editor's Note: The following letter is from Beth Mercer-Taylor, a resident of Falcon Heights and a member of the community's City Couuncil. The views expressed here are solely hers.  As an involved citizen and city council member in Falcon Heights,  I am concerned about the media portrayal of the endorsement "race" between my own State Sen. Mary Jo McGuire and old District 54 State Senator, John Marty. Your coverage of the race suggests to me, as a reader without background, that the new Senate District 66 is John Marty's district. It is his race to lose, perhaps.  I don't really think that is fair.  Look at the geography and at the demographics. The new SD66 is made up of 47 percent of the area that was in the old SD66, or Mary Jo's …

It's obvious that some like Beth Mercer-Taylor feel that redistricting in the past has hurt candidates like Sen. McGuire when she was serving in the house. If you recall, she decided not to run against Rep. Mindy Greiling after the 2000 census changed the district because of her close friendship to her, and possibly splitting the party vote. What part of Roseville does Mary Jo McGuire represent? To the best of my knowledge, all of Roseville is in Senate District 54. Senate District 66 is Falcon Heights and Saint Paul.   more ›
