Overtime 68-66 win over Roseville propels Royals to state tourney.
Before a capacity crowd at host East Ridge High School Thursday night, the Woodbury boys basketball team beat Roseville 68-66 in overtime to gain the Section 4AAAA Championship and a trip to the state high school tournament. Down by as many as 12 points in the second half, Woodbury roared back and finished regulation play tied 61-61. Led by junior Renard Suggs, 26 points, and his senior brother Rickey, who had 12, the Royals held on to win one of the most exciting games in recent area high school hoops history. Woodbury is now 22-5 on the season. State competition begins Wednesday at Williams Arena.

Sen. Al Franken will be in Woodbury on Thursday to drop the puck at the Woodbury High Schoolboys hockey game against Roseville. The U.S. senator is set to arrive at 7:10 p.m. and visit with coaches and players before dropping the puck, according to a release from his office. He plans to watch the game with students and fans. The game will be played at the Bielenberg Sports Center.

The new Class 6A football sections set to begin for the 2012 season have been released, according to the Minnesota State High School League’s (MSHSL) website. And for Roseville High School, the new alignment means “it will continue to be very competitive,” said Scott Allen, the school’s activities director. The MSHSL announced this spring that it would expand to a six-class, 11-man football playoff system beginning in 2012. The expansion called for a 32-team Class 6A tournament, which will be broken into four, eight-team sections: Section 3, 4, 5 and 6. Section 4AAAAAA will include Roseville Area, Stillwater Area, Woodbury, White Bear Lake, North High (North St. Paul), Mounds View, Forest Lake and Cretin-Derham Hall. The eight teams will …
