Days are Numbered for St. Anthony Village Walmart

Construction work continues on a new Roseville Walmart supercenter. which is slated to open mid-2014.

As construction crews continue work on a new Walmart supercenter in Roseville,  the days are drawing down for the discount retailer's store in nearby St. Anthony Village.
Ron Lopez, manager of the future Roseville store, said rumors of the St. Anthony Village store eventually closing "are true because we are relocating to Roseville."
Lopez' statement confirmed rumors that circulated for weeks  about Walmart's St. Anthony store.
Lopez said he doesn't know the details of closing the St. Anthony store, where he is currently the manager. But he indicated the big box store probably will stay in business until the Roseville store opens in mid-2014. Walmart officials broke ground in May for the future Roseville store. They said the project will bring 300 new jobs to the community. Lopez said employees of the St. Anthony store will be offered the chance to take jobs at the new store.

The 150,000 square-foot supercenter in Roseville is being built on a 14-acre site northeast of County Road C and Cleveland Avenue.

Meanwhile, Walmart spokeswoman Delia Garcia gave this statement to Roseville Patch about the St. Anthony store situation:

"We are always looking for ways to better serve our customers and provide them with more convenient access to a broad assortment of the items they want and need.

The fact is the existing Walmart discount store in St. Anthony operates in a leased space and offers little opportunity to expand our product selection. Just a few miles down the road, we found an opportunity to expand our product offerings to our St. Anthony and Roseville customers by constructing a new store in a building that Walmart will own.

The Walmart Supercenter at the intersection of County Rd. C and Cleveland Ave. is already under construction and is slated to open in mid 2014. This store will better serve our customers by providing a one-stop shopping destination for a broad assortment of value-priced merchandise as well as fresh, affordable groceries."
