RAHS Students Perform One-Act Plays Next Week

The plays allow more students to get involved in theater.

Roseville Area High School will present four one-act plays next week.

“We decided to produce one-acts instead of a full-length play to allow more RAHS students to get involved in the theater experience,” a release quoted RAHS faculty member Samuel Tanner. “This project became a way to use theater as an educational tool, while also creating opportunities to participate in several one-act competitions around the state.”

  • Confessions: Kafka in High School sets Kafka’s famous story, “The Trial,” in a contemporary high school. An absurd, dark comedy, this one-act follows the trial of Connor K as he is accused of committing a crime without being told what that crime is.
  • All I Ever Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten is an in-depth look at what we lose and gain as we transition from childhood to adulthood. Based on the best-selling book by Robert Fulghum, the play’s universal messages allow the audience to join in their own discoveries.
  • Waiting for Lefty explores the lives of a group of New York City cabdrivers in 1935 at a union meeting to discuss the option of going on strike. Comprised of a series of vignettes that give a glimpse into their tumultuous lives as they struggle to make ends meet, each character’s story blends into a powerful and stirring mosaic.
  • All in the Timing, directed by RAHS student Anna Marie Heins, presents a series of vignettes ranging from a parody of American composer Philip Glass’s music to the death of Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky. These unrelated scenes are fast-paced and sometimes chaotic with frenetic wordplay and the complications that accompany relationships.

There will be a special senior matinee at 1 p.m. Jan. 22 that is free for seniors. Other performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 23 through 25. There will also be a matinee at 2 p.m. Jan. 26.

Performances take place at the high school’s Nielsen Performing Arts Center. Reserved seat tickets are $8 and general admission tickets are $5. Reservations are available online at www.rahsdrama.net or call 651-604-1481.
