Update: Summer Solstice Storm Hits East Metro

Limited damage in Roseville but many people without power.

For the East Metro, including Roseville; this morning served up a rude awakening to the change of seasons.
On the first day of summer, severe thunderstorms rumbled across the Twin Cities, leaving thousands in Roseville and in the metro  without electric power and many with tree damage.
Even into the early afternoon, thousands remained without power. As of about 2 p.m., about 2,300 Roseville Xcel customers were without electric service.
Xcell noted that there have been many downed poles, power lines and trees.
Late this morning  (Friday), Roseville city officials reported generally minor damages with street crews out picking up branches.
"But nothing really out of the ordinary after a storm," said Carolyn Curti, city communications specialist.

She said that Steve Zweber, Roseville streets maintenance supervisor, noted  crews were  sweeping streets in preparation for the Rosefest 5K Run and Roll for the Roses races  and Monday’s parade, and they were finding a fair number of branches.

Also, one block on Victoria was closed because of a downed branch. This morning, crews were "waiting until Xcel Energy to give  them to go ahead whether there are power lines down caused by the storm," Curti said.

Meanwhile, in an update, Xcel Energy reported restoring service to more than 32,700 customers affected by the severe thunderstorms that passed through Minnesota and Wisconsin last night and early this morning.

"The Twin Cities Metro area was significantly impacted by this storm" with "outages throughout our service area," Xcel officials said. "Due to the extensive damage, some customers will be without power for an extended time."
